Poulsbo, Washington is known as “Little Norway” because of its Scandinavian heritage and Norwegian immigrant population.
- Norwegian immigrant Jørgen Eliason founded Poulsbo in the 1880s.
- The town was named after a Norwegian village called “Paulsbo”.
- The U.S. government misspelled “Paulsbo” as “Poulsbo” when processing the town’s post office application.
- The town was settled by many Norwegian and Scandinavian immigrants who were drawn to the area’s similarities to their home countries.
- The town’s economy was based on farming, logging, and water transportation.
- The town’s community celebrates its Scandinavian roots through cultural events, Norwegian-inspired cuisine, and Scandi-style architecture.
Today, Poulsbo is a coastal city with a thriving community proud of its Viking heritage.
